Shannon 38 Below Decks
Auxiliary engine
Westerbeke 4-108.
Propeller 16×11 RH 3-bladed (3/4 – 10 Nuts). Treated with Tempo Outboard/Outdrive Anti-Fouling paint.
At the helm: Remote fuel pre-heat and engine start and stop;
Readouts of fuel pressure, temperature and rpms;
Audible alarms for engine low oil pressure and high temperature.
Fuel Delivery
55 gal diesel tank. Fuel feeds through Algae-X scrubber (scrubbing technology from the oil drilling industry) to a 12 volt pump positively feeding the rest of the system (allows easy bleeding of complete fuel system); thence to a manifold of two paralleled Racor filters (allows change of filters while underway); thence to the engine-driven fuel pump and on to the engine fuel filter.
Baja fuel filter for on-deck delivery point.
Fuel Usage 1 ½-2 hrs/gal > approx. 500 – 550 nms range
Engine oil has been changed every 100 hrs or less.
Electrical System
Engine starting battery -1000 CCH (Battery 2)
- Echo charged from Battery Bank 1
House Battery – 4-Trojan T105 6-volt batteries series/paralleled in 12v configuration; 450 amp hrs total (battery bank # 1)
- Desulfator – breaks down plate buildup ensuring better power delivery and longer battery life
- battery combiner trickle charges starting battery off house bank
Monitored by Link 10 Battery Monitor – provides instant readouts of battery voltage, amps in/out, amp/hrs of useable power left, and hrs left at current rate. 2 Amp-meters read output of engine alternator and/or wind generator (shunt) and battery draw. Located over electrical panel.
30-amp ground power charger – Professional Mariner 3- channel smart multi-stage battery charger
Engine charger – engine alternator through AlphaPlus 3-stage smart regulator
Wind charger – Four Winds 2 with 360 degree directional pivot
- provides 3-4 amps @ 15knt wind
- quiet power at all wind speeds
- allows complete electrical power self-sufficiency
Solar panel – Solarex VLX 1-2 amp panel
- trickle charges to maintain battery during extended absences from vessel
Portable Honda Generator
- 9 1/2 hours operation on 0.3 gals of gasoline. Runs fridge, charges batteries and provides AC power for tools all simultaneously. In operation on the foredeck, cannot be heard in the cockpit
3 panels of DC breakers and 1 Ac panel
High level of power independence
